Sleeves
Penny sleeves vs perfect-fit sleeves, and when to double-sleeve
Penny sleeves are the everyday first layer. Perfect-fit sleeves are inner sleeves for double-sleeving. They solve different problems.
The short answer
- Penny sleeves are the basic soft sleeve for a standard card going into a top loader, a box or a page. Ultra PRO’s original holds standard cards “up to 35 points”.
- Premium soft sleeves do the same job with heavier film. Ultra PRO’s Platinum Series Card Protectors are 115 microns.
- Perfect-fit (inner) sleeves are tight, thin sleeves that go on first, with an outer game sleeve over them. Dragon Shield: “slide your card top first into a Perfect Fit sleeve, then sleeve your card as you would normally.”

How double-sleeving fits together
The inner sleeve goes on top-first; the outer sleeve goes over it from the other end, so both openings are covered. KMC’s Perfect Size is made to fit “inside all KMC Standard sleeves”; Dragon Shield’s Thick inner sleeves “fit smoothly inside regular Dragon Shield sleeves.” Mixing brands is common, but makers only promise fit within their own lines, so the Finder only calls it exact within a line.
Japanese-size cards
Smaller Japanese-size cards need Japanese-size sleeves, such as Dragon Shield Matte in the Japanese variant or KMC Perfect Size Mini (87 × 60 mm).
Triple-sleeving
No maker here publishes a triple-sleeve fit, so we don’t recommend one.
Questions collectors ask
Can I put a perfect-fit sleeve in a top loader?
Makers here don't publish that combination. Ultra PRO pairs its top loaders with penny sleeves, and Vault X with its soft or exact-fit sleeves.
Do I need thick-card sleeves?
Ultra PRO rates its penny sleeves to 35pt. For thicker cards, Vault X sells soft sleeves for cards up to 130pt (70 x 98 mm).
