Card storage boxes by capacity, and what each one holds

The number on the box assumes a certain card. Here's what each count actually means, and which boxes take top loaders.

What the counts mean

Count boxes are named for an approximate number of thin cards. BCW’s own wording: the 800 Count box “holds about 700 standard 20pt trading cards” and “about 1140 collectible gaming cards”. The 3200 box holds 3,200 standard or 4,800 gaming cards.

Top loaders and magnetic holders

A 3” × 4” top loader stands 4” tall. The BCW 800’s inside depth is 3-3/4”, so the Fit Finder marks loaded top loaders as won’t fit there. BCW doesn’t publish row dimensions for the 3200, so we can’t confirm it either way. Vault X is the only maker here that publishes holder capacities.

Choosing

  • Bulk commons: a multi-row cardboard box.
  • Sleeved playsets or decks: a TCG card box or deck box rated for sleeved cards.
  • Loaded top loaders and magnetic holders: a box whose maker states holder capacity.

Questions collectors ask

Why does an 800 count box hold only 700 cards?

BCW says its 800 Count box holds about 700 standard 20pt trading cards or about 1,140 collectible gaming cards. Thicker cards and sleeves take more room.

Do top loaders fit in a count box?

Not in the BCW 800, whose inside depth (3-3/4") is less than a top loader's 4" height. Vault X publishes a capacity of 180 35pt toploaders for its Card Box 450+.
